2005 OUT TAKES Dallas Film Festival

2005 OTD LookThe 7th OUT TAKES Dallas has come and gone, and with it many great Lesbian and Gay movies.

First weekend goers were entertained by the opening film, 29th and Gay, and got a chance to meet the filmmaker, Mark Holmes. Saturday, we screened Unveiled, which leaves our festival to enter a Theatrical Release in New York. And Saturday night, we showed Hate Crime, a Dallas-made film that has just entered an international distribution deal, to a sold-out SRO house. Saturday and Sunday also showed two of our near-famous Boys and Girls Short Films Programs. Our late-night film was Gay Sex in the 70's.

On Tuesday, we showed Eighteen (including actors Sir Ian McKellan and Alan Cumming) and had Director Richard Bell present for the screening and a Q&A afterward. Richard, who is from Vancouver Canada, definitely got a taste of some Dallas hospitality!

On Thursday we went back into gay history with Original Pride, which highlights the The Satyrs Motorcycle Club, the oldest continuous gay organization in America and their 50th anniversary celebration.

On Thursday night, we screened the classic film "Valley of the Dolls" with Alonso Duralde, Arts and Entertainment Editor of the Advocate. Alonso has penned "101 Must-See Movies For Gay Men" (a few signed copies are still available at Crossroads Market) and although the listing in the book is in alphabetical order, this movie is arguably his favorite. Those that were in the audience were filmed for the upcoming collector's edition "Valley of the Dolls" DVD soon to be released by New Wave Entertainment.

On Friday, we presented The Lady In Question Is Charles Busch. If you have seen Die Mommy Die!, then you'll know that Charles has become a camp favorite.

At the end of the week, two of our short films programs were repeated: Lesbian Life, and Dyke Drama . Also, two new short films programs premiered: Boys Laughing , and Speedos, Puppies, and Fetish, Oh My!.

On Saturday, Wilby Wonderful told a story of dark comedy in a small town in the pacific northwest. Producing Adults is a drama of a coupled woman in Finland and her relationship with her fertility doctor. We also had an encore of the women's feature Getting To Know You / The D- Word.

Our Saturday evening feature, Formula 17, was a lighthearted look at a boy's discovery of gay life in the big city. Later that evening, That Man: Peter Berlin showed the secret life of the famous Model and Porn Star.

THE FILMMAKERS

We have also had several filmmakers in attendance at their film screenings and participating in our 2nd Annual Filmmakers Symposium. Filmmakers here for the opening weekend: Mark Holmes, 29th and Gay; Liz Lachman, Getting To Know You; Mark Sterling and Tommy Stovall, Hate Crime; Brian Pelletier, No Match Found; and Gwen Baba, Little Man.

The 2005 OUT TAKES Dallas Lesbian and Gay Film Festival concluded on Sunday evening with our closing feature, WTC View. Director Brian Sloan and lead actor Michael Urie were in the audience to celebrate the closure of another successful festival.

THANKS TO YOU!

Thanks to all that made this year's festival a success - our sponsors, our volunteers, and our audience! We hope that you enjoyed our selection of films for this year, as well as the special events surrounding the festival.

The seats in the theater are hardly cool and our group of all-volunteer staff are already hard at work on next year's festival. If you would like to help with film review or any of the other hundreds of things that it takes to put on OUT TAKES Dallas, please go to our website and sign up as a volunteer.
